The shortlist of entries to the Royal Photographic Society’s International Images for Science competition have been announced.

100 images have been selected from the 3563 entries submitted from students, amateur photographers, professional and medical photographers who were asked to take a visually appealing picture that tells a science story either with a camera or smartphone.

The pictures include water refracting, aurora over a glacier, a pancreatic cancer cell, and a tornado.

The competition is supported by Siemens as part of the Curiosity Project, a three-year programme which aims to engage young people with science and engineering.

The five winners will be announced in an award ceremony in London on 12 September. After this time, the shortlisted images will form an exhibition that will be displayed throughout the UK during the forthcoming year.
