After Nepal’s Earthquake, Endurance
On April 25 of last year, Nepal suffered a magnitude 7.8 that killed almost 9,000 people and injured nearly 22,000. In its wake, aftershocks continued to hit the country on an almost daily basis, including a 7.2 quake in May. All told, almost three million people were left homeless, as hundreds of thousands of homes and other buildings were turned to rubble.
Omar Havana, a photographer based in Kathmandu, was there for the earthquake and luckily escaped his apartment before its walls buckled. He went on to photograph the immense devastation, desperate rescue attempts, and the irrepressible will to rebuild. Bhaktapur to Gorkha, Kathmandu to Sindhupalchowk, Omar was inspired by the endurance of the Nepali people.
In partnership with the organization FotoEvidence, Omar is producing a book, “Endurance: Earthquake Nepal,” which tells the story of a harrowing episode in Nepal’s history. Copies of this book will be donated to libraries and community organizations around the country. To fund this initiative, FotoEvidence has launched a Kickstarter campaign starting today.
