Today marks the fifth anniversary of the death of Chris Hondros, a Getty Images staff photographer who was killed in Misurata, Libya, while covering the country’s civil war. The same attack also claimed the life of photographer Tim Hetherington. To commemorate the occasion, Time Magazine asked for recollections of Tim and Chris from those who knew them and their work. Panch Bernasconi, the vice president for editorial photography and Getty Images, writes:

In reflecting on our professional and personal relationship, I’m struck most by Chris’s ability to be present and in the moment. It’s what made him such a profoundly talented photographer but it’s what also made him such dear and important friend to so many of us. It is a lesson that is still seeping its way into me and I am grateful to have been shown its power by such a good and decent man.

In the wake of Chris’s death, a fund was created by his friends to preserve his legacy and support the work of like-minded photojournalists working in conflict areas. This year’s winner of the Chris Hondros Fund Award is Bryan Denton, a photographer who also extensively covered the Libyan war. Iranian photographer Kiana Hayeri received the Fund’s emerging photojournalist award.

An annual online auction to support the Chris Hondros Fund will launch on April 22, culminating in a benefit reception on May 4 at Aperture Gallery in New York.
