Rio’s Favela Ballet School

On Brazil’s evening news, Complexo do Alemão, a group of slums in Rio de Janeiro, is known for deadly shootouts between police and drug traffickers that have claimed the lives of children. But in a quieter part of the neighborhood, a group of young girls are having their lives changed for the good. Three days a week, on a scuffed blue sports court, nearly 50 girls, from ages 4 to 17, assemble in pink tutus and slippers for ballet class. The program, Na Ponta dos Pés (On Our Tiptoes), is the creation of Tuany Nascimento, 22, who turned to teaching after giving up her own dream of becoming a professional dancer.
