Venezuela’s economy is in free fall, with runaway inflation and shortages of food and medicine. While its president, Nicolas Maduro, waits for a rise in global oil prices to halt the decline, its citizens wait for basic provisions.
Reportage photographer Alejandro Cegarra photographed the scene in Caracas, the nation’s capital, where cadres of riot police keep watch over long lines of frustrated shoppers at government supermarkets. Inside, store managers flood the aisles with decreasing items they have in stock, hoping to avoid the depressing image of empty shelves. Above, an aisle full of vinegar.
