Ian Parry Scholarship Offers Two Awards for 2016

The Ian Parry Scholarship will recognize two emerging photographers this year, with its Award for Achievement and Award for Potential. Each winner will receive $3,500 toward their chosen project, as well as equipment from Canon. As in previous years, the winner of the Achievement Award will be added to the 2016-17 Reportage Emerging Talent roster and nominated for the World Press Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam. This year, the winner of the Award for Potential will receive a yearlong mentorship with Reportage photographer Tom Stoddart.

“Being a professional photographer can be lonely and frustrating,” Tom writes, “especially at a time when the publishing industry is going through rapid and massive change. It’s always good to have someone to talk to and I’m really looking forward to providing help, experience and encouragement to a young photographer as they endeavour to progress in this most difficult and wonderful profession.”

Over a nearly 40-year career, Tom has photographed major global events like the war in Lebanon, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the bloody siege of Sarajevo, where he took one of his most well known images, of Meliha Varesanovic walking proudly and defiantly to work in 1995.

The Ian Parry Scholarship, named for a British photojournalist killed while covering the downfall of Romania’s dictatorship in 1989, is accepting applications through July 7. It is open to photographers 24 years and younger, or full-time photography students. Visit the website for more information.
