Documenting Life in Afghanistan with Photojournalist Paula Bronstein

Photojournalist Paula Bronstein (@pbbphoto) started traveling to Afghanistan almost 15 years ago — documenting what it’s like to live in a war-torn country. “I’m lucky to be able to bring attention to people who are often invisible,” Paula, who’s based in Bangkok, says. “As a woman, I’m able to give a voice to Afghan females who quite often remain silent.” This photo is from one of her more recent trips, during which she stayed at an Afghan National Army training camp outside of Kabul.

Tonight in Washington, D.C., Paula’s work is being celebrated by the IWMF (@theiwmf) with an Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award honorable mention. While she may have seniority in the field, she has a positive outlook about age. “I think a lot of women in their 50s feel like there is a stigma attached. You want to act young, and you want to look young. But everything depends on how you live your life, your energy, your passion.”
