Adam, an immigrant from Zambia, who lives in a derelict high-rise in downtown Johannesburg, South Africa. The building, which was abandoned by its white owner following the end of apartheid and has no electricity or running water, is now occupied by migrants from a variety of African countries. Amid South Africa’s recent economic struggles, migrants have been the victim of xenophobia and violence, accused of having taken away jobs from South Africans.

Reportage photographer Jonathan Torgovnik made several visits to this building over the last year, documenting its squalid, dangerous conditions. “Sometimes I would be there for two hours, sometimes for five minutes, sometimes for half a day, depending of the level of tension,” he tells AI-AP’s David Schonauer. “I’ve been to many countries in my career — poor areas, slums in Asia, Africa and South America, and I’ve never seen such conditions of poverty,” he adds.
