Reportage Emerging Talent: Yuyang Liu

Of the millions of people suffering from severe mental illness or disability in China, the large majority of them do not receive adequate medical care. Most of them live at home with family members ill-equipped to assist them; outside the home, they are nearly invisible. In his recent work, Chinese photographer Yuyang Liu has explored the relationship between the mental ill and disabled, their families, and society at large. For his project, photographed his subjects in several towns and villages in Guandong Province with the aim of raising awareness about how the mentally ill and disabled live, within the home and outside of it.

As the winner of this year’s Ian Parry Scholarship for photographers under 25, Yuyang is our newest addition to the Reportage Emerging Talent roster. Yuyang, who was born in 1991 in Sichuan, is based in Guangzhou. See more of his work on the Reportage website.
