The Changing Face of Saudi Women
Saudi Arabia is one of the most gender-segregated nations on earth, which presents challenges to a photojournalist trying to peer into the private lives of women. For its new story on women redefining what it means to be female and Saudi, National Geographic enlisted Reportage photographer Lynsey Addario, who has worked in Saudi Arabia many times over the last 12 years. In a video on National Geographic’s Proof blog, Addario describes the difficulties of working in the country:
“Every time I go there, I go there with a sort of sense of dread of how difficult it will be to photograph and how impenetrable the place is,” Addario says in the video above. “And then I find myself there and having fun and meeting these incredible women.”
