When incidental becomes something more

When incidental becomes something more

The Art of Adventure - Bruce Percy

What started out as a cursory glance this morning turned into an edit session that came together very quickly.

When all the images are unedited, they can appear as if there’s not much of anything there at all. What grabbed me today were the murals - just three images shot very quickly inside a monastery, were a joy to play with and see where they went. Adding in the more regular winter lake shots seemed to add a dimension to the collection and before long I knew what the complete set of nine images would be.

I have often thought that when things are right, they are right. When things work correctly, things come together quickly. Songwriters of very famous songs have often said ‘the song seemed to write itself’, and I think that when we are in the creative zone, then things tend to come together more easily.

I suppose it would be worth mentioning that this does not guarantee that the work is any better than work that may have been difficult or hard to complete. But I have often felt that if I’m striving too much, or hitting too many roadblocks with what I’m trying to do, then maybe I’m approaching it from the wrong angle.

Other times, it’s just that the timing is wrong. I’m not in the right frame of mind, things aren’t clicking. Something is off…. and rather than trying to work on that too much, it might be best to back off, and go do something else that does work.

This set of images has been sitting on my table for more than six months. I had no intention of working on them today, or any other day for that matter. But somehow, today seemed to be their day. They were waiting for me, and somehow, I was ready.
