Monty Rakusen Photographers BlogThe third of July:
For Dave.
I last stood at this spot almost exactly 41 years ago. Richard Nixon was
embroiled in the Water Gate scandal and resigned a few months later. There were plenty of fall out shelters
and it was deep in the Cold War. We could have been nuked at any time.
The Vietnam war was just dragging to a bloody end. There were
hippies protesting and wounded vets all around rather like a scene from
Forrest Gump. If I had been a US citizen I would have been drafted to go
fight in a jungle. David Essex was top of the charts in the UK. There
were no computers, no internet, no mobiles or cordless phones, no Facebook, no twitter, no blogging no apps. No ‘modern world’.
I was with my friend Dave who has sadly passed away many years ago but I
still have the privilege of experiencing my existence. It’s an amazing
world even with all it’s terrible faults, we should be thankful for
every moment!
This is from my recent trip to the USA on assignment near Washington DC. I will be posting about this project once it is published.
