Gavin GoughBuddhist devotees circumambulate the sacred stupa at Boudhanath. The “Kora” is the path around a sacred object or place. Every clockwise step along the kora is a step towards enlightenment. Devotees spin dozens of prayer wheels in the wall around the stupa as they walk. Some spin hand held prayer wheels and most recite the simple, six syllable mantra, “Om Mani Padme Hum”.
⠀⠀
Some devotees measure the distance of the kora by the length of their bodies, prostrating themselves upon the path, often dropping a stone to mark the furthest point of their reach before standing and moving forward to where the stone is lying then prostrating again.
⠀⠀
Some Buddhists complete pilgrimages lasting many months, measuring the distance of the kora with their bodies in this way. It’s usual to see many people performing this act of devotional merit-making each day at the sacred stupa near Kathmandu.
