Recently, I’ve been writing about ‘things unseen’. Those things which ordinarily remain hidden from plain sight but which influence us in profound ways.⠀
⠀
That theme of seeing beyond the obvious must have been what made me pick up my old, infrared camera this morning. It’s a Canon DSLR which has been modified to record infrared light.⠀
⠀
Infrared light has longer wavelengths than visible light so the camera reveals a world which would otherwise remain hidden. Foliage, for example, reflects a lot of infrared light, in much the same way as snow reflects visible light, producing images with a soft, bright, dreamlike quality.⠀
⠀
There’s something very captivating about the process of infrared photography. It’s like seeing a parallel world which exists all around us yet of which we remain unaware most of the time.⠀
⠀
It’s quite addictive and I often find myself walking along, looking at the infrared world through the camera’s LCD screen, wondering what striking, otherworldly sights are about to be revealed.⠀
