Atomic Reactions: Paul Shambroom, Ben Huff, Brett Leigh Dicks

Peacekeeper (MX) missile silo test launch preparation, Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The test missile was selected at random from operational silos in Wyoming and shipped to Vandenberg. The warheads have been replaced with instrumentation packages. Several such missiles are launched each year towards the Kwajalein Atoll test range in the south Pacific to monitor the ICBM force's reliability and accuracy. Vandenberg is the only location from which US land based ICBMs are test launched for quality control or research purposes. The Peacekeeper missile was retired by the Air Force in 2005, all of the 450 remaining U.S. ICBMs are Minuteman III.
