Best cameras for landscape photography in 2021

DPReview Latest

Landscape shooters have a unique set of needs and requirements for their gear. Image quality is critical, and benefits from plenty of resolution and lots of dynamic range; from a physical standpoint, it should be weather-sealed and well constructed. Features like in-body stabilization, touch-sensitivity, a tilting LCD and good battery life are also a plus.

We've rounded up the cameras we think are good options for landscape photography and have chosen the best.

To keep things somewhat accessible, the price cutoff in this guide is around $4000. There are medium-format options above this price that offer better image quality.

Our pick: Fujifilm GFX 50S II

The Fujifilm GFX 50S II brings medium format image quality under our $4000 cut-off for the first time. Its large sensor, compact size and in-body image stabilization make it an excellent tool for landscape work. Meanwhile, the interface and handling elements inherited from Fujifilm's X-series models make it a very approachable, usable camera.

The more expensive GFX 100S is even better, but the 50S II will deliver excellent image quality in even challenging lighting conditions. Details such as the viewfinder resolution aren't as impressive as some of its full-frame rivals, but the end results make it worthwhile.

For more than just landscapes: Nikon Z7 II

The Z7 II’s ISO 64 setting, which allows it to capture 2/3EV more light than most of its full-frame peers, gives image quality that's directly competitive with the larger sensor Fujifilm.

However, even though its autofocus isn't quite up with the best Sony and Canon cameras, the Z7 II is faster and more responsive than the GFX II, making it more adaptable to other types of photography. It's also a less expensive camera, giving you the option buying additional lenses for the same outlay. If your interests extend beyond just landscapes, the Nikon is well worth a look.

We considered the cameras below when picking our winner, and even though we think the Nikon Z7 II is the best choice, the other cameras on our shortlist are also worthy contenders.
